The Beetle was designed in 1925 by a Hungarian Student
After an hour or so of driving the Karmann Ghia on a sunny, 80-degree day, I noticed that my face was sore from grinning the entire time. I also had to ask my wife to repeat what she had just said because I couldn't hear a thing after having an air-cooled engine blaring behind me for so long. But hey, it's all part of the charm. Volkswagen beetle This damning judgement proved as ill founded as that of Decca record bosses who, in 1962, declared “The Beatles have no future in show business”, and turned the mop-tops down. Since then, global sales of highly lucrative Beatles’ albums have topped two billion. The Volkswagen Beetle, meanwhile, with its friendly styling by the Austrian designer Erwin Komenda, and innovative engineering by Ferdinand Porsche, became the best-selling car of all time.

However, nearly every country has its own nickname in its language for the Beetle. In France they call it “Coccinelle” which means ladybug. Italy calls it Beetle but in their own language it’s “Maggiolino”. Bolivia calls it the “Peta”, which means turtle, and Indonesia uses “Kodak” (frog) to refer to the car. Designing the Beetle Narrator: In 1949, Volkswagen took the Beetle to the United States, and it was a massive success. Unlike the big, flashy cars popular of that era, with their chrome and fins, the Beetle's modest size and teardrop shape stood out.

I mean, look at that: it’s a Beetle. Of course, it’s not exactly the same as what the final Beetle design would be when finalized in 1938 – the fuel tank appears to be behind the rear seat, for example, there’s less accommodation for cargo and a spare tire up front, and so on, but it’s still the same basic idea, just in 1925. VOLKSWAGEN Beetle This 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle is a white-over-white convertible powered by a fuel-injected 1.6L flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Additional equipment includes a white soft top, 15″ Lemmerz steel wheels, chrome-finished bumpers, bright trim, dual side mirrors, and an Alpine CD stereo.
